The Path of the Paycheck
By Carole Souza
Wouldn’t it be interesting to be able to follow along behind an employee’s paycheck to see where it actually goes? Most employers’ trust that they are assisting their employees in creating and maintaining a comfortable lifestyle for themselves and their families. Many employees are hounded by debt that just doesn’t ever seem to go away. Oftentimes, the first sign of trouble that an employer sees is after the fact, when an employee has been hit with a garnishment of their wages. This action not only affects the employee, but also the employer who is required to adhere to the order of the court. The additional time that is consumed by the payroll department becomes very costly.
A company is never too big to be paying attention to the signs of employee stress, particularly around money and debt issues. An employer who is really committed to providing an open door policy also provides an environment of education and information aimed at improving work skills and particularly life skills. One way to enhance an employee’s life skills is to invite an outside educational provider to come into your workplace. Many times employees in debt feel more comfortable with information that is given to them in a group setting and are more likely to ask for help later if they know that it will be non-threatening and confidential.
Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) can help employers whose employees are being garnished as well as businesses that are faced with people who cannot pay their debts. A referral to CCCS can be very helpful in assisting your employees in addressing their entire financial picture and working out plans for paying their debts. For more information on how CCCS can help you and your employees, or to arrange for one of our Employee Assistance Program workshops, call (541) 779-2273.
