Jackson Josephine Workforce Council Helps Fund Local Workforce Development Projects

By Mary Holbrook

The Jackson/Josephine Workforce Council (JJWC) has awarded $5,000 to the Rogue Institute for Ecology and Economy (RIEE) to help fund the Little Applegate Ecoforestry Pilot Project: Harvesting Small Diameter Materials for Forest and Community Health. The project trains displaced timber workers and other un- or under-employed persons in yarding and small-scale, onsite processing techniques. The goal is to encourage the transfer of a base of skills to an emerging industry based on ecosystem management, so that both workforce and market supply are in place simultaneously.

The Rogue Valley Community Development Corporation (RVCDC) received $2,500 to further its collaborative efforts with South Medford High School to create the West Medford Rehab Project. JJWC funs will help RVCDC purchase two vacant houses which SMHS students deemed "at risk" of not completing high school will renovate. Students learn a positive work ethic, develop skills in technology, communication, teamwork and construction. After renovation, the homes will be sold to low income families.

The JJWC will offer another round of funding for projects which provide training for either the emerging (school age students), transitional (individuals in-between jobs) or current workforce (individuals who wish to upgrade their skills and earn a higher wage). Local businesses, along with public and private organizations will be encouraged to apply for grant funds. The formal Request for Proposal will be publicized in November, 1998 for a January round of funding.

Businesses interested in taking an active part in workforce preparation issues can contact Dennis Alexander, Staff to the Jackson Josephine Workforce Council, at The Job Council, (541) 776-5100.
